Today was my first sonogram at my OB office. I had blood work drawn at 5 weeks for progesterone and HCG levels. The nurse practitioner told me that if my hcg levels were greater that 2000, that we were more likely to see something on a sonogram. It turns out that at 5 weeks my hcg levels were around 5000 so they booked me for my first sonogram and prenatal visit at 8 weeks.
Today was the big day! B and I had just gotten back from a business team conference at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV. It was fun, relaxing, and great catching up with friends! Thankfully B also took today off and was able to accompany me to the office visit. I have been seeing this OB/GYN group since I was in high school, but it was his first time coming with me to a visit.
The visit started off with a sonogram. The sonogram tech, Sharon, was very nice and informative. She explained to me that the sonogram was going to taken trans-vaginally and reassured me that it wouldn't hurt. She allowed me to empty my bladder and give a urine sample at the same time before the test. In the sonogram room they have a tv on the wall which mirrors the image on the sonogram machine so you and your spouse can see what the tech is looking at. I knew right away when I saw the TWO sacs! I didn't say anything as I wasn't 100% sure, but deep down I knew it was twins. With my nausea and extreme fatigue, I figured that it was either having twins or a girl. Maybe it'll be twin girls? LOL. Brandon eventually asked if Sharon was going to explain to us what she saw, which of course she said yes. I think he had an inkling too. Anyways, she looked at me and said that its twins and I started laughing and crying at the same time! Totally in shock! But I think relieved that everything was okay! There were two babies (I saw one wiggling) and two strong heartbeats (160 and 170 beats per minute)!!! Two little peanuts!!!
After the sonogram, I was taken to another exam room where a nursing aid took my blood pressure, which was sky high at this point! They decided to recheck it later after I met with the OB. I actually know Dr. Lizardo (one of the groups OB/GYN) from my work as recovery nurse at the hospital. We're actually Facebook friends! It was great sharing the news with him. He knew I was expecting since my mom told him at work (she's an OR nurse). It was a pretty straight forward conversation. Any questions that I thought I wanted to ask had flown out of my head. Still in shock. But he did write me prescription for Zofran since he said my nausea was going to be worst before it got better. I'm also coming in for a second sonogram in 2 weeks "to make sure everything is still boring" as he placed it. LOL.
He also referred me to get another sonogram in about a month which would give a more in-depth picture of the babies. Luckily, I can get it done at the hospital where I work so it's very convenient. Overall it was a very surprising visit. I must say I'm still shocked and I don't think the weight of the news has fully hit me. I think it's because I know that I'm still very early. Maybe I'll be more excited when in well into my 2nd trimester when the risk of miscarriage is less.
Still... twins!!! I'm dying to know whether is two girls, two boys, or one of each! I've praying the next 5 weeks go by smoothly and that my little peanuts stay safe and healthy :)
