15 weeks

I have finally stepped over the threshold and entered the second trimester!!

On Friday I had another sonogram and OB visit during my 14th week. Glad to hear and see that the babies are doing well and growing right on schedule. They weren't as active during the sonogram, but my theory is that they were napping. I had a 1pm appointment this time rather than one in the morning, and usually Baby A is all wiggles. I'm pretty sure they were taking a noon time nap :)

So let talk stats... At 14 weeks and 6 days (for me), Baby A measured at 15 weeks, 1 day and had a heart rate of 150 bpm. Baby B measured at 14 weeks, 6 days and had a heart rate of 146 bpm. Both normal and within expected parameters! The sonogram tech was really nice and showed us the stomach, kidneys, and femurs of each baby; how she could differentiate each image is beyond me! But I guess if you look at enough ultrasounds you'll know what you're looking at. She said it was still too early to tell the sex :(

I do have another appointment in two weeks, which will place me at 16 weeks. They are going to draw an AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) blood test and do another sonogram to make sure my cervix is isn't shortening. The AFP tests for the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida, which you try to prevent by taking prenatal vitamins (specifically folic acid). I guess they are monitoring my cervix closely since its my first pregnancy and there are twins. If your cervix starts to shorten too early in pregnancy it can place you at risks of preterm labor, which would mean those dreaded words.... Bed rest! Thankfully everything has been going very well. I also should mention that I had a first trimester screening at a perinatologist (high risk) OB office around 12 weeks, and results showed that the babies had a low risk of having Downs Syndrome and Trisomy 18. So yay!

I can't wait to find out the genders of the babies. My instincts tell me that its a boy and a girl, but Brandon swears its two boys. Wishful thinking on his side, plus I think the idea of having two girls scares him! Lol. But in all honesty, we just want two healthy babies and a safe pregnancy.

So, I'll end with my 14 weeks sonograms on the two peanuts! The tech only gave us one pic, which is of the top of their heads. Hopefully come next month (around 18 week to 20 weeks), we'll know whether my instincts were right :)
